Find More Joy In Your Career and Entrepreneurship

Don`t whine, complain or make excuses about what you cannot change.

As someone who has worked in some of the largest and leading Aerospace and Pharmaceutical companies in the world here is my best advice. Don`t try to change what you can`t. And don`t whine, complain or make excuses about it either. In each company I have worked for I have seen plenty of fundamental mistakes being made. These mistakes can create enormous inefficiencies across the company. The best you can do is point them out, provide examples and trust your advice is taken (one day). There may be a million reasons why the company’s priorities lay elsewhere and most of them are probably legitimate. Do your job to the best of your ability and don’t worry needlessly about what is outside of your influence.  When the company feels enough pain they will change. In the mean while enjoy your job and stop worrying about what you cannot change. You`ll feel a huge weight lift off your shoulders.

Segregate your tasks into Vice Presidential duties

As an entrepreneur I have found that segregating my tasks into Vice Presidential duties helps enormously. One day I am VP of Production, another I am VP of Sales, and another VP of Finance. This affords me more clarity as to what needs to get done during any given day or week. Trying to do everything all at once, usually leads to only partially completing tasks and frustration. As I am writing this article I am VP of Production. I am not thinking about any other tasks other than production and writing this article. And I am enjoying writing it immensely. Try it! For more great information on this concept read the book E- Myth Revisited.

3 Ways To Make Peace With Money

October 22, 2009 by Terry

I enjoy money. Actually, I have had a strong love hate relationship with money all my life. It has completely stressed me out at times, been a constant worry and also made me ecstatic.

Discover what money represents to you

Are you conscious of how much money you carry around? Is paying bills a chore? Do you whip out a credit card because you want to keep your cash on you? Do you spend more than you make? Let’s face it, money is a huge driving force in our lives. However, first we decide what lifestyle we choose to live and then we try to make enough money to live that lifestyle. Some of my friends are brilliant and thoughtful people yet have no desire to accumulate wealth. As long as they have a roof and food they are happy. Books help too. Some of my friends are wealthy. They love a challenge and some challenges have made them rich. If money has conditioned you to constantly think about it, then you need to change your relationship with it. Do you want a peaceful existence with money? Look first at your lifestyle. Is your lifestyle high maintenance? Perhaps you just need to look around and see how much effort it takes to maintain your lifestyle. If it is too much effort, then make the required changes to live a simpler and less stressful life. Start making those changes today! Start with one small change.

Remove all fear of money.

Most people I know worry about their future when it comes to money. They equate money with happiness. They worry constantly if they will have enough. Or they fall for get rich quick schemes. What if you changed your lifestyle and did not have to worry about money anymore? How would that make you feel? What SENSATION would that bring? It would probably be a huge weight off your back. Your life may even become completely stress free! Don’t you want to FEEL that sensation? Think about waking up every day and not having any money worries. I bet that your lifestyle has become simpler as well. Learn to let all of the fear go. You will love that stress free sensation. Learn to remove all the fear.

Its fine to treat yourself …but

All this talk about materialism on the Internet can make people feel incredibly guilty about buying anything. I don’t think it’s bad to buy yourself a treat for working hard. Even if that treat is a fancy sports car. However, I think it’s important these days to understand whether your purchases are creating a big carbon footprint. I think it’s important to consider the environment when making purchases. A global economy has huge consequences. If you decorate your personal jet with a rare African wood, perhaps you just made that wood extinct. Perhaps the emissions from your jet are seriously contributing to global warming. Perhaps that plastic trinket you bought extracted a cup of oil from the ground. If we do treat ourselves, think about the earth’s resources that went into building that treat. Perhaps you won’t buy it after all. Perhaps your life will also be simpler. And mother earth will thank you. Do you really care? I hope so.

The New Achievement Rule: Feel The Sensation Of Success

October 19, 2009 by Terry
Filed under Goal Setting, Happiness, Mind

The second biggest value people are seeking on www.mylifechanges.com is achievement. Achievement, success, accomplishment, whatever you want to call it will never be reached without following this golden rule.

First feel the sensation of achievement

First you have to feel the sensation of achievement in whatever area of your life you are trying to change. It may be wealth, relationships, health or just serenity but the key is to visualize yourself as already achieving your goal. Feel the sensation of reaching your goal. Visualize it, taste it, feel it. How does it make you feel? This is the all important question. Does it make you feel proud? Does visualizing your accomplishment make you feel like you are being of service? Does it give you a warm and fuzzy feeling? Meaning and purpose?

The problem is that most people picture their success as a BMW or a large house. But these are just fleeting feelings of material accomplishment. They never last. What really last are feelings of happiness, peace, bliss  and fulfillment first felt in your heart and then in your mind. Remember when you went away on vacation? Perhaps you stayed near the beach and saw dolphins swim by each morning. Memories that bring that kind of pure joy to your heart , are what stick in your heart and mind. There was that everlasting sense of wonder from something bigger than you. It will last a lifetime. Now think back to all the toys you have had. Do they bring back a sense of wonder and joy? No. It is your feelings and sensations from something other than your stuff that will bring you a long lasting joy. Joy from material objects never last.

Now picture yourself having achieved your goal. How does it make you feel?

Now that you have captured that feeling, it is time to take action. Go and start working on your goal. And always keep that sensation of achievement inside of you. You’re ultimate goal is to capture that wonderful feeling you are after. That feeling is what your success should be. That feeling opens up your heart.

The #1 Goal In My Life

October 15, 2009 by Terry

I am seeking permanent serenity, joy and happiness. It isn’t always easy. Becoming enlightened means we have to let go of all the conditioning, worries and ego that we carry with us every day. It requires that we accept life as it is and stop struggling against it. We slowly learn how to tear down all the walls that protect us and to let the light shine in. We learn how the heart reacts to life and then the mind afterwards, creating unnecessary pain, insecurity and worry. We learn how to not react and to not keep the pain inside of us. We also learn to accept suffering, instead of avoiding it and move on. We learn to let it all go. We learn to use our consciousness. We learn to be truly happy.

I read that we are one spinning planet of water and dirt spinning around a star, amongst hundreds of billions of stars in our own Galaxy. Sometimes I look up at the sky and think about that. It seems that everything else is trivial compared to that thought. Should I be that concerned about what people think about my clothes or car?

I am learning to accept everything life has to offer. My time is limited on this planet. I want to spend the rest of it experiencing freedom, joy, peace and love. I hope you choose to join me.

2 Guaranteed Ways You Can Drastically Change Your Life

October 12, 2009 by Terry
Filed under Lifestyle, Mind, Zen Forever

I continue to draw on meditation and living in the present moment to live a calmer, happier and more carefree life. They have all helped tremendously. Now I am in the process of finding an endless energy flow by releasing all useless thoughts and fears.

Each thought takes up valuable energy

Every movement, emotion and thought that passes through your mind takes up your energy. A closed mind closes off your energy. An open mind opens up you to more energy. To experience high energy means to live a life without your inner voice constantly chatting you up. Learning to live with an open and quiet mind is a key to living a truly remarkable life. When we fight life with constant thoughts we continuously restrict the flow of energy and allow fear to take over our lives. Don’t lose yourself in your thoughts. Be aware of them and let them go. You are not your thoughts. You are more than that. Let go of them right now. Begin by asking yourself “Who am I?” You really are not your thoughts.

Fear is the cause of every problem

Fear stems from emotions such as anger, jealousy, possessiveness and envy. Getting rid of fear will open your heart and remove those endless negative thoughts that run like a movie reel through your mind. Learning to accept and let go of your fears will be the best life change you can achieve. It is our fears that hold us back in life. Fear that we will not be good enough at work. Fear that we will not find love. Once we latch onto our fears and dwell in them they become very difficult to let go. We allow our fears to condition us and this in turn makes us act certain ways. This also uses up our precious energy. Remove all the obstacles that create your fear. Let them go. Keeping your fear inside you will only trap you. Let it go. Open your heart and let in what life is trying to teach you. Now you will be on a remarkable spiritual path to feeling at peace with yourself and the world.

Here’s How To Make Life Changes

October 7, 2009 by Terry
Filed under Goal Setting, Happiness, Mind

I created www.mylifechanges.com to help you make meaningful life changes. I can’t force you to make life changes. Only you can decide that. I have supplied a tool for you to use. I could become your personal coach but you probably can not afford a life coach. I hope you decide to make life changes today, because tragedy can strike at any time, and by then it may be far too late. This website will make you think. Thinking is good.

Decide who you are

First, you will need to decide who you are. Are you a parent, entrepreneur and athlete? Or are you a philosopher, businessman and wealth builder? Understanding your own big picture will set the frame for the next steps.

Decide what your core values are

Here are the top 5 core values (in order) people are seeking on www.mylifechanges.com: balance, achievement, commitment, love, and happiness. I don’t think it is necessary to list more then 5 core values. I also think that happiness is a very good core value to seek. Without happiness is life really much fun? Now you are ready to set goals according to who you are and what core values are meaningful to you.

Decide what your goals are

Take your most important core value and set a goal that will help you live accordingly to it. If your value is happiness, your goal may be to start the morning off with a smile. It’s simple but goals don’t have to be complicated to have a huge effect. Don’t set too many goals. It will be too difficult to reach a bunch at the same time. Kind of hard to quit smoking, lose weight and meditate all at the same time. You have taken perhaps the three most important steps in your life.

Track your changes

Use the color coded tracker to see how you are doing. I made the tracker as visual and simple as possible to make it easy for you and I. You are now on your way to making life changes. Congratulations!

Is it that simple? Yes it is. Why should it be complicated? You have a need, I supply a tool, you take action.

How I Went From From Nothing To Everything With One Word

October 4, 2009 by Terry

Ask. Why the hell don’t people ask more? Asking is the single most powerful tool in your life. Asking can open opportunities that you never dreamt possible. Asking can make a closed door become wide open. Asking begins an action.

How I received a 24% salary increase in one year.

I asked my new young whippersnapper boss for a raise one year at work. I brought all my supporting documentation and almost banged on his desk while demanding a raise. I got all the bullshit reasons to why he couldn’t. What he did do for me however was offer me a coveted spot on a special IT project (SAP). Maybe the bastard was getting rid of me. After completing my year and a half on the project I asked again for a raise. After being turned down again I immediately took a severance package and quit the company. They begged me to stay. I found another job in a huge airspace company two weeks later. A year later the company performed a market study and raised our salaries. With my regular increase I received a whopping 24% raise in pay! The lesson from this is that I asked for that initial raise. If I had never asked nothing would have happened. Ask and you shall eventually receive.

How I always eat a delicious meal.

Can’t decide what to eat at that fancy restaurant you had reservations for a month? Ask the waiter for what is most popular. It usually turns into something pretty damn yummy.

Have a pressing problem at work?

I find many people are embarrassed to ask questions at work. They feel like they will look like an idiot. But why struggle for hours or even days over a problem when you can ask someone? And usually they are only glad to help. All this fretting over asking is usually all in your head. Get a grip on yourself and start asking for help. It really is that simple.

Have any questions for me? Ask away. I’ll be more than happy to help out.

3 Reasons Why Some People Almost Always Go Insane But I Don’t

October 1, 2009 by Terry

Traffic

There are some days when I feel like slapping people in traffic. They rudely cut me off and force me to jam on my brakes like a rookie F1 driver on a rainy day. I then fantasize about rolling down their window and smacking them silly. Or if the traffic is thick I would jump out, crouch and sneak up while springing up at their window shrieking BOO!! and waving pretend claws in the air. Of course the first would get me arrested and the second may cause a heart attack.

Traffic solution – Audio books

I listen to audio books in my car. Lately I’ve been loving “Living a Life of Inner Peace” by Eckhart Tolle. I take pleasure in some spirituality on occasion and this audio book is not only spiritual but hilarious. Eckhart gives an amusing, introspective and at times wistful talk to an audience and shows us a side that really makes him more human (less robot). Believe or not, probably my favourite Audio book for the car. Look at me calling him Eckhart, like I’m his beer drinking bud. That should be MR Eckhart.

Purchasing dress pants

I tried going to discount stores like TJ Maxx to buy cheap dress pants but discovered that I end up looking like MC hammer in his hilarious balloon pants after a while. Hard to find nice inexpensive dress pants. Shirts are much easier.I think so.

Dress pants solution – Find a store you like (and that has nice pants?)

Now I buy all my dress pants from Tristan. They fit well, have a good selection and I try to purchase them on sale. After Christmas is a great time. The only down side is the buttons pop off because they are machined on (and made in Canada!). So I get this tiny Chinese woman to sew them back on. Out of the blue last week she accuses me of not paying 3 cents on the tax and I threatened her boss about taking my business elsewhere. WTF? Anyhoo, we straightened it out and almost had a three way group hug. Who knew buttons or 3 cents could cause WWlll! Find a store you like and stick with it.

Work stress

For many years I found myself in the morning gulping down breakfast, worrying about the latest work issues, hopping in the car and barreling down the highway to make it in on the hour. Yes, a very stressful way to begin the day.

Work stress solution – Have a great morning

Now I gulp down my breakfast and tweet! Ok, not the most relaxing method but one major difference is that before hopping in my piece of metal on rubber tires, I take a few moments to take in the beauty of the morning. This comes from years of meditation and practicing living in the now. The world can be a truly stunning place in the morning. The air is amazingly fresh and at times delightfully dewy. Clouds roll lazily by. Just looking up at the sky can be a Zen experience if you  take your sweet time to soak in the moment. Not hours now, we are talking a few minutes here. After my morning intermission I’m then prepared to barrel down the highway once more. Kidding! But that small break creates a much more relaxing start to the day.
