What Really Matters To You?

Welcome to all of you that have joined My Life Changes! I’ve taken a break from writing but am back in the saddle again and am going to chronicle my own life changing journey to inspire and motivate you.

After reading the book “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” ,  I’ve decided to focus on two key goals in my own life. Goals that really matter! Weight loss and debt reduction. The book taught me to focus and commit to improving what is truly most important to me.  Usually it’s best to focus on one at a time, but I think I can manage two.   I’ve been spinning my wheels in these two areas and it’s time to take a breath, plan and hit the gas pedal.

I would love to lose 20 pounds and get rid of two small nagging debts by Dec 1 2011.  I also look forward to setting up a savings account for emergencies

I’ve written extensively about weight lose and debt, now it’s time to conquer these two key goals before even THINKING about another one. Come along on the trip with me! Yes I’ll motivate and inspire you in other ways, but I’ll always let you know how I’m doing in these two areas.

Sounds easy right?  Uh huh. Making life changes and creating a new lifestyle is never easy. It takes commitment and constant follow up until the new goal becomes a habit.

What really matters to you? Pick an area in YOUR life that matters and come along for the ride with me.

Give Me 5 Minutes And Chris Rock And I Will Help You Get A Career

Job (role), a regular activity performed in exchange for payment

Career

A person’s “course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)”.

Do you have a job or a career? I have two careers. One is to improve business processes utilizing large scale information technology. The other is to help people make important life changes. I never think of them as jobs.

How do you define what you do? I hope you at the very least have a career.

I love the way Chris Rock defines a Job vs. a career.

It’s hilarious yet oh so true.

If you do not have a career, begin to make a few life changes to create one.

It’s never too late.

How I Started A New Life With One Hour

There are 24 hours in a day. Once those 24 hours are up, that day will be gone forever. Then a new one starts all over. Then it is gone forever too. How are you spending each day?

The burning question is how do you spend your 24 hours? During the week, we may have 7 hours to sleep,8 hours for work, 1 -2  hours for various and traffic, 2 hours for meals. This leaves us with about 6 hours. Let’s say we exercise for 1 hour and if we have a family, 3 hours with them.

We still have about 2 hours left over.

1-2 hours to start your dream.

1-2 hours to begin your blog.

1-2 hours to meditate and relieve your stress.

1-2 hours to read self development and expand your mind.

I spend 1 hour a day on this website, writing, editing, modifying, creating and finding incredible meaning and purpose.

What is stopping you from planting the seeds of the dream life you always imagined? Why aren’t you spending an hour a day on what YOU love? Why are you giving 8 hours to a corporation and leave nothing for yourself?

It’s time to stop screwing around, wasting your time and make the life changes you want right now.

There is absolutely no excuse.

I Always Failed At Goal Setting – So I Started Reading My Life Changes

One of the key rules of great goal setting is to be specific. People may have read about this a dozen times, but they still continue to set vague goals. Let’s explain the problem with this.

If you set a goal to paint the spare room (because it will look fabulicious painted) it’s easy to set this vague goal. “Paint the spare room”

However, if you are specific and write down – I will paint the spare bedroom on Saturday morning, May 28 …well now you have set aside a time and date which further commits you to take action. Now you know that this date is for beautifying the spare room and not golfing, shopping ,snoozing, web surfing or TV.

This rule especially applies to business. If you have a large project to execute and people are counting on you, you break the project into smaller specific goals and commit to a date for each one. Or else the project will be a miserable failure.

So why shouldn’t you apply the same rules to your personal life? Your goals in your personal life are even more important.

Be specific. Commit to a date and a time.

When I designed this website I used the tracker here in its beta form and broke down each step in order to create the website. It took a few months but if I had not set specific goals and timelines this fabulous website would not exist.  : )  There had to be a business plan, design, programming, testing and support.

Now it’s your turn.  What fabulous goals or habits do you want to create in your life? What steps are required and by what date are you ready to commit yourself to?

Let’s do it.

Now! How To Make A Life Change Stick

With so many distractions these days and a continuous bombardment of news and advertising, no wonder it’s difficult to make life changes.  We try to change but short term gratification is always around the corner to take us off our path.  It may be that extra glass of wine, jelly filled doughnut, TV remote, or a quick shopping spree with a Visa card.

We only have so much will power, and like a well trained muscle our will power runs out. So how do we gain more will power?

By making our life change, new habit or ritual painful to break.

That is why I wrote about putting in a pledge into My Life Changes. This pledge will be like sharing a contract with another person.  If you fail to make your life change stick you have to give the other person whatever you pledged.  It may be 5 dollars, 100, you favourite CD, DVD, sweater or whatever you wish to put in the contract.  It’s your choice what you decide to pledge.  You may also pledge something to yourself as well, as a reward for sticking with your life change and keeping a promise to meeting your goal.

So begin to think about what kind of pledge you want to make.  Bring your friends in on it. Make it fun.

You will be surprised how a little sacrifice (or pain) will make you succeed.

I pledge to give ____ if I do not reach my goal, by this date __ __ __

Create Habits That Are Important And Make You Happy

Are you doing the things in life that are most important to you? Are you doing the things that make you happy? That bring you joy?

What are the habits or rituals that give your life the most meaning and purpose?

The more you put your habits on autopilot the easier life gets.  Think about it.

In my life I have a number of important habits that are automatic for me.

  • I don’t keep sugary snacks in the house because I don’t buy them at the grocery store.
  • I listen to self development audio books in the morning traffic because it keeps me calm and I learn something new every day.
  • I try to write in my blog every day because I believe that the meaning of life IS to give something back. And if you are reading this I’m giving.
  • I bring a banana, yogurt and keep dried apricots at my desk because every bite I put in my mouth will affect my future health.
  • I listen to meditation tracks every morning because I want the day to begin in a mindful and calm way.
  • I have regular automatic deposits of money into my retirement fund because I don’t wish to worry about money later in life.
  • I envision my dream life every day so I am always driving towards it.

I don’t really have to think about these habits, they automatically happen.

What automatic rituals or habits can you develop to distract you from negative temptations?  What kinds of immediate gratifications are stressing you out? Are you over eating? Over spending?

Get your healthy habits on autopilot.

Take control of your life.

See How Easily You Can Discover Your Core Personal Values

What behaviors from others drive you crazy? What INFURIATES you? Which behaviors force you to draw a line in the sand?

These are the questions you should ask yourself. These are the questions that will point you to your most cherished core personal values. They are the opposites to what you really stand for.  It’s usually pretty easy to figure out what you don’t like.

Have you seen a boss humiliate someone in a meeting?

Does sitting in traffic piss you off?

Does the greed of Wall Street enrage you?

Are you feeling like a prisoner in your cubicle?

Is the stress in your life killing your health?

Now think about what values are the opposites of these feelings?

How about respect?

Joy.

Freedom.

Health.

Peace.

Compassion.

Giving.

Your values are your moral compass, a source of energy and most of all they motivate you.

My most cherished value is freedom. Freedom inspires me to build a life where I can work anywhere in the world. Where I can make my own rules. Where I can share my dreams with others.

What are your core personal values?

NEXT 90 DAYS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE – A Warning From My Life Changes.

Most of the moments in life are lost forever.  We have about 600,000 moments a month and our remembering self ignores almost all of them. Kinda sad huh?

Are you keeping score of your life? What is the score? Are you proud of your score?

Are your memories beautiful stories that you can tell yourself, families or friends? Or are your recent memories of watching television? Maybe you have been stuffing yourself with burger and fries. Are you in a cubicle working late for that brainless boss?

Why aren’t you creating wonderful memories? Why aren’t you creating a story of your life that will make you proud?

Have that dinner party with your best friends and share your dreams. Feed those dreams to your soul.

Write your dreams down, stick a date on them and make them fucking happen.

Your future is waiting for you.

Take that meditation class.

Get your ass to the gym and hire a trainer.

Take your kids to the zoo.

Make that passion into a living, breathing business.

Fill your life and memories to the brim with fabulous stories. Stop being scared. Take a fucking risk.

The next 90 days are wide open.

Make memories that connect with your soul. Make memories that last until eternity. Make memories that shake the very core of your being. Go crazy.

Now you have a story to tell the world. Now your score is 10 out of 10.

The world is waiting.

90 days.
