Is there meaning and purpose?
Thanks for those of you that have joined recently and I hope you find this site a wonderful tool, not only to track goals, habits and choices, but to perhaps provide some meaning and direction in your life.
In our fast paced society we tend to become overwhelmed with work, family demands, health and financial issues, advertising and a constant bombardment of bad news. Sure doesn’t leave much time to reflect on life doesn’t it? I think that taking the time to reflect and ponder on what is truly important to you is key to a fulfilling and meaningful life.
What is a meaningful life? Is it having a large home, fancy car and perhaps huge debts? Is it climbing the corporate ladder? Or is it attending the kid’s soccer practises, laughing with friends and picnicking with your family? It’s whatever you want it to be I suppose. But I do believe that having a deep connection with people and community is fundamental to an interesting, diverse and meaningful life. As a matter of fact, I am convinced that if we worked four days a week instead of five, and used that extra day to focus on improving our community (and family), the world and especially North America would be a much better place. Sure you may have to give up the SUV (that never goes off road), start cooking healthy meals (instead of eating out) or live in a smaller house (that takes less of earths resources) but maybe it will get you off the fast track to Stressville (and save more of mother earth).
I hope that we all slow down to take a close look at what is really important to us. I hope we are happy with how people will remember us. A bus may hit us tomorrow. Oops! I hope not!
I hope we live by our values. If some of you have taken just a few minutes to reflect on your life and future than I know that my work here is done. OK, partially done.
I remember looking out my window in Italy and seeing a bunch of neighbours out on the sidewalk happily chatting to each other. No large mansions separating them. No interpersonal Internet chatting. Just a group of people enjoying each other’s company. Just having great personal connections with people is, how do we say it – priceless.
Just a few reflections.
BTW - here is an interesting site http://www.myfootprint.org/
Thanks for stopping by.
