Are you doing the things in life that are most important to you? Are you doing the things that make you happy? That bring you joy?
What are the habits or rituals that give your life the most meaning and purpose?
The more you put your habits on autopilot the easier life gets. Think about it.
In my life I have a number of important habits that are automatic for me.
- I don’t keep sugary snacks in the house because I don’t buy them at the grocery store.
- I listen to self development audio books in the morning traffic because it keeps me calm and I learn something new every day.
- I try to write in my blog every day because I believe that the meaning of life IS to give something back. And if you are reading this I’m giving.
- I bring a banana, yogurt and keep dried apricots at my desk because every bite I put in my mouth will affect my future health.
- I listen to meditation tracks every morning because I want the day to begin in a mindful and calm way.
- I have regular automatic deposits of money into my retirement fund because I don’t wish to worry about money later in life.
- I envision my dream life every day so I am always driving towards it.
I don’t really have to think about these habits, they automatically happen.
What automatic rituals or habits can you develop to distract you from negative temptations? What kinds of immediate gratifications are stressing you out? Are you over eating? Over spending?
Get your healthy habits on autopilot.
Take control of your life.
How An Index Card Can Change Your Life

I’ve carried around a 4 x 2 inch index card with the words “Are you being more loving today”, for a few months. By doing so and looking at it many times during the day, I’m creating a constant awareness of this new habit. Most goals or new habits fail because we start off incredibly enthusiastic at first but then fall back into the safety and security of old habits.
My values of peace, joy and even love are being reinforced by this index card. I’m less judgmental, feel more empathy and smile in public more often. When I am waiting in line I do not curse under my breath or demand my change back from a cashier with an outstretched hand and a frown on my face. I approach with a smile, a joke and open heart, and in turn I usually receive a smile back.
By having the words “Are you being more loving today”, carried in my wallet I am becoming more loving in all aspects of my life. I’m calmer and more peaceful in public, at work and with family. I am becoming more of an extrovert and feeling greater compassion.
This technique of writing down a goal or habit on an index card works for anything. Whether you wish to exercise, make new friends, lose weight, stop smoking or feel more joy. It keeps a strong awareness of what you truly wish to change at all times. If you want to exercise more it isn’t always about going to a fancy gym, it may be taking stairs or riding your bike to pick up a DVD. Reading the card reinforces the habit!
I hope you can use My Life Changes as a way to discover your purpose, values and goals in life. Now pick a goal and keep it on you at all times. Look at it many times daily. After a while it will become a part of you and the card can be tossed away. Get rid of those old habits. I dare you to try it, I’m sure you will be amazed.

How To Break A Bad Habit

What I have found works best for me is taken from the saying – out of sight, out of mind. I also find it important to remember that a good habit (or ridding an old habit) usually takes about thirty days to take hold. So don’t fret so much about using sheer willpower, concentrate on the thirty day time period and take pride in your accomplishments as each day passes.
It is also important not to try and break too many bad habits at the same time. Pick a couple of habits, set some goals, write them down and track them.
Breaking bad eating habits
The simplest way to avoid eating unhealthy foods is to not keep unhealthy foods in the house. Next time you go grocery shopping don’t buy those cookies, cakes or whatever food which adds unhealthy calories to you. I usually zip down the cookie isle, ignoring them as they call my name.
Breaking bad money habits.
There are plenty of people who have no willpower if money is readily available. These days it’s far too easy to extract money from an ATM machine. So what do you do? Hide it. What I mean is lock it away in a 401K plan or RRSP. That way it is much harder to get at it and you will pay penalties for early withdrawal. Once again like the unhealthy foods – out of sight out of mind. Just make your money extremely difficult to access. You will also find that you end up paying yourself first instead of everyone else.
Breaking the worry habit
Worrying about something usually take us away from the present moment. And the present moment is always the most important moment in our lives. Once we lose the present moment we stop experiencing life at its best. Living in the now means enjoying life to its fullest, letting go of the past, letting go of past conditioning and being our most authentic self. So bring yourself to experience the immediacy of each moment in life and let go of your worries. Come back to the now of yourself as much as possible. You will discover a whole new world around you.
